This is a one of a kind excursion to see the "real" Cozumel - eat local Yucatan style dishes and beverages. Browse and explore the local fresh market.
Your unique day begins at the meeting point just a short distance from the cruise piers - by taxi if coming from Puerta Maya or International pier, walk if at Punta Langosta pier. Your English speaking, out going guide will get you checked in, show you where the restroom is and then all aboard the transportation.
One quick note...since you will be doing ALOT of eating on this excursion, you might not want to fill up beforehand! Your guide will be giving you all sorts of information throughout the day including insider info, history and traditions about preparing some of the food you will be tasting. Not to worry, all food and beverages are made with or prepared with bottled water.
Downtown is just a few minutes away and your first stop. Handmade savory empanadas. These are like a turnover filled with meats, cheeses and other ingredients. Beverages will be served at each stop as well! Note that in general, the food is not spicy that you will be eating on the excursion. At each stop, you will find salsas to put on your food and that is where you should heed caution as they can be wicked hot! You also might get to try a local type hushpuppy item called a kibi...delicious.
Your next stop is a local taco stand where they sell a traditional Mayan dish typical of the Yucatan - cochinita pibil. This is a type of slow cooked, roasted pork that is chopped and served on tortillas. There is a unique blend of spices and ingredients such as achiota and sour orange. You will be given the opportunity to shop for some the ingredients you see along the way at the end of the excursion.
The local fresh market is your next stop - El Mercado. You will see a variety of meats, seafood, fruits and household goods being sold. Your guide will talk about some of the items you see as you stroll the aisles - hand embroidered clothing, hammocks, unusual looking fruit and more. This is a good opportunity to take photos as the locals are usually more than willing to pose and have their photos taken.
Your next stop is a neighborhood restaurant that serves locals lunch. On your menu is bowls of sopa de lima or Yucatan lime soup. There is even more to come!
Freshly caught local seafood is next. Depending on the day you will have fried shrimp tacos or whole fried fish. All served at a quaint little restaurant where you can sit back and watch island life.
Sweet tooth? Dessert is next with a stop at a local bakery where you will have a freshly made sweet pastry. At the end of the food lovers excursion, your guide will take you back to the meeting point at a local supermarket and assist you finding some of the items, chiles and spices that was used in preparing your food today.
